NCSSM Counseling Services is committed to creating an environment that celebrates the unique stories and voices of each member of our community, recognizing all dimensions of identity (e.g., ethnicity, culture, race, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, age, physical and mental abilities, religious beliefs and socioeconomic background). Our approach to mental health and wellness integrates physical, emotional, academic, spiritual, social, and cultural well-being. We support students’ adjustment to the NCSSM community, individual personal growth, academic endeavors, and transition to college or other life pursuits.
What counseling services are available?
School Counselors - All NCSSM students are assigned to a school counselor before they begin their junior year. Families and students can locate the name of their assigned counselor in Blackbaud and on this site. School Counselors provide college and career planning, academic counseling, and personal counseling. They teach the junior year College and Career Planning course during the second semester.
Our school counselors empower students to take charge of their college and career journeys with personalized, relevant support. Our dedicated team offers ongoing, adaptable services designed to meet the evolving needs of students and their families. From individual and group counseling, academic planning support, to a comprehensive college and career readiness platform, we provide the tools and resources students need to navigate a rapidly changing landscape and pursue their goals with confidence.
Wellness Counselors - When students need additional support, they may be referred or self-refer to wellness counseling. Our wellness counselors are available to support students facing more significant, acute, or ongoing mental health and wellness challenges. Wellness Counselors provide compassionate, confidential counseling aimed at promoting emotional well-being and helping students navigate difficult experiences. They also assist in coordinating referrals to outside mental health services.
Throughout the year, our wellness counselors host a variety of wellness events and activities designed to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Highlights include Pet Therapy visits, where therapy dogs provide comfort and stress relief, Connection Lab events (skill-building groups around different topics), and Wellness Week event planning, held in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, featuring events and resources focused on self-care, mindfulness, and emotional support.
